Why did Sony stopped making PSP?

Ryan cited mobile gaming as the main reason why the company pulled out from the handheld gaming market. It seems like the company does not want to develop first-party games for a handheld console as Nintendo has proven with their consoles that there's still scope for a handheld device.

Sony has been killing it in the home console market as the PlayStation 4 has now surpassed 100 million units in sales this year. The PlayStation 2 is by far the best selling console in the company's history as it sold over 150 million units in its heyday. However, the company also experimented with handheld consoles with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the PS Vita. While the PSP did incredible numbers in sales; the PS Vita was a disaster as it did not have any beloved games or first-party support to make it a robust console. Due to the PS Vita's dismal performance, the company is no longer interested in handheld devices. The Nintendo Switch has already proven that a handheld console can still be a huge success provided it gets good support from first-party and third-party studios. However, the PS Vita did not get the same support from developers as it did not have any good first-party or even third-party titles.

The recent patent filing revealed that Sony applied for a game cartridge type that hinted that the company might be working on a portable console. However, it seems like the cartridge system will be used for swappable SSD cartridges instead of game cartridges like the Nintendo Switch uses. In fact, in an interview with Game Informer, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that Sony is not working on a portable console alongside the PlayStation 5. “PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great,” Ryan said, “But clearly it's a business that we're no longer in now.” Ryan cited mobile gaming as the main reason why the company pulled out from the handheld gaming market. It seems like the company does not want to develop first-party games for a handheld console as Nintendo has proven with their consoles that there's still scope for a handheld device. The main reason why the Nintendo Switch has seen staggering sales numbers, even in India is due to the plethora of both first-party and third-party games. It seems like Sony either doesn't want to invest in games for a handheld device or are simply focused only on the home console space. Apart from lack of games on the PS Vita, the console was also not a viable purchase due to the highly-priced proprietary memory cards. In an era where gaming was to be made more accessible to the mass audience, Vita's own self-inflicted problems stood completely against that notion.
