A depressing part of being a woman is all the adjustments you have to make just to feel safe walking outside. One of the most popular methods is to hold your house keys between your fingers in a fist, the idea being that if you were attacked, you could jab the pointy keys into your assailant to defend yourself.

But one TikTokker says this actually isn’t the best approach.

A woman who goes by @faesfx shared a video explaining that the placement of a key between your fingers could cause you harm more than defending you from an attacker. ‘I’ve seen a lot of women say that they are carrying their keys like this to feel safe,’ she says, showing a key between two fingers. ‘If I punch, that key is going back into me and is going to hurt me.’ Instead of holding your keys in this usual way, @faesfx recommends a far more effective technique – taking your longest key’s base and gripping it inside your fist, with the point coming out of the bottom.

It’s tricky to explain, so it’s worth watching the video.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The woman explains that this hand placement works much better, because ‘that key isn’t going anywhere’. She also notes that holding your key this way could protect you if you are grabbed from behind, demonstrating the difference between the two different key holds by acting out a scenario with a friend. When the friend is holding the key in the recommended way, she is able to punch her arm back and stab her attacker in the leg. ‘She moves her hips, she can stab me in the delicates,’ @faesfx added. While it’s miserable that we need to consider the best forms of self-defence as just part and parcel of our everyday lives, it’s helpful to know the best technique for protection.

What is assault on a female called?

An assault on a female is considered to be a crime of domestic violence. This can have repercussions for your right to own a firearm, be listed on your criminal record as a crime of domestic violence, and could have serious implications to your current or future jobs.

There are three elements that must be met to be charged with assault on a female. The first element is that an assault must have occurred. This element overlaps with other assault chargers, but the next two elements are what differentiate assault on a female from other assaults. The second is that the assault has to have been upon a female. Lastly, the assault must have been committed by a male who is at least eighteen years old. An assault charge can lead to either a felony or a misdemeanor conviction. North Carolina structures misdemeanors into four different categories. Class A1 are the most serious types of misdemeanors, and crimes are further broken down into Classes 1, 2, and 3, with Class 3 being the least serious. According to North Carolina’s General Statutes a person convicted of a simple assault is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. Whereas, a person convicted of assault on a female is guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor. This is an important distinction because a class A1 misdemeanor can carry up to a 150-day jail sentence. This could mean serving an active jail sentence, even with no prior conviction. An assault on a female can also carry different consequences than an ordinary assault charge. An assault on a female is considered to be a crime of domestic violence. This can have repercussions for your right to own a firearm, be listed on your criminal record as a crime of domestic violence, and could have serious implications to your current or future jobs.
