Why is aim so shaky?

If the skin of your hand, wrist or arm is catching on the mousepad or desk this will introduce extra resistance and contribute to jittery aim. The first thing you can try is to wash your hand, wrist and arm with soap and dry off before playing.

One of the most common questions asked in the aiming community is how to fix shaky or jittery aim. We have prepared 4 easy steps you can try today to achieve silky smooth aim.

1. Reduce Friction

If the skin of your hand, wrist or arm is catching on the mousepad or desk this will introduce extra resistance and contribute to jittery aim. The first thing you can try is to wash your hand, wrist and arm with soap and dry off before playing. After awhile you may start to feel some resistance again, if this happens you can just repeat the process. This may actually make your aiming feel too fast and slick, if this is the case you can skip the soap to maintain some of your skin’s oils. Wearing a sports sleeve can also be very helpful for reducing friction, particularly combined with the tip above. For more information on what you can expect from wearing a sleeve, and which one to use, check out our video on the topic below. Your mousepad can also be the cause of shaky aim, particularly if it’s old and worn out. Look into giving it a clean or simply replacing it if possible. An added bonus of pre and intra-session washing combined with wearing a sleeve is that you will almost never need to wash your mousepad again. These steps significantly prolong the life of your mousepad.

2. Mouse Sensitivity

It is generally accepted that higher mouse sensitivities (eg. 5-25cm/360~) are harder to play smoothly compared to lower sensitivities (35-60cm/360~) where it is much easier. Playing on a lower sensitivity doesn’t mean you have suddenly solved this deficiency, but it can let you avoid the problem all-together.

3. Focusing on Your Target

There is a huge difference between looking at a target and focusing on a target. Take a look at the ceiling fan below. Looking right at it, the blades are a blur, but if you focus on a single blade you can track it spinning around. This is the difference we are looking for. If you are only looking at your target you are missing out on visual cues that aid with comprehending their speed, trajectory and strafing pattern. This makes the movement of your opponents feel fast, erratic and hard to follow, and subsequently your aim will also be erratic and shaky. Focusing on your target will instantly make it feel like it’s moving slower and more predictably. This allows you to track it with more calculated aiming movements that are inherently smoother.

4. Aim Training

Open up KovaaK’s and play Smoothness Training 60. This is a simple scenario with a predetermined strafing pattern so you don’t need to worry about reactivity or reaction time. It will purely test you ability to track the target horizontally. Don’t worry about the score too much, even with shaky aim it can be perfectly tracked. So instead, do your best to track it smoothly, and reflect on how shaky or smooth it feels. To find more scenarios that can aid in improving your smoothness, navigate to online scenarios, click advanced search, choose tracking and then smoothness. If you want to be even more selective, simply type smooth or smoothness in the search bar to find scenarios people have made specifically for this skill.
