Why is Fifty Shades of Grey Rated R?

The MPAA announced Wednesday that the film will receive the restricted rating for "strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language." While the terms "graphic nudity" and "strong sexual content" make sense in the description, the term "unusual behavior" is less clear.

'Fifty Shades' rating: What's unusual behavior?

Show Caption Hide Caption Trailer: 'Fifty Shades of Grey' The widely popular novel, 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' comes to life on the big screen. VPC Fifty Shades of Grey is steamy enough to receive an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. That's no surprise.

But the MPAA's explanation about the rating is, well, highly unusual.

The R rating means moviegoers under the age of 17 hoping to see the film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson must be accompanied by an adult. The filmmakers did avoid the far more restrictive NC-17 rating, which would allow only people ages 17 and up to see it. Dakota Johnson stars as Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling novel. Steele's reality gets rocked when she enters the S&M-filled world of billionaire Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. Reached by phone Thursday, film historian Leonard Maltin chuckled about the phrase "unusual behavior," adding "that's the first time I have heard that term" in a ratings description. "It's the newest euphemism," said Maltin. "You could say that Guardians of the Galaxy had 'unusual behavior' as well. But it's a nice turn of phrase." Ethan Noble, chairman of MP Consulting, a company which helps studios and producers navigate the ratings process with the MPAA, said he had never heard the term "unusual behavior," though he has submitted more than 1,000 films to the MPAA.

"That's definitely a new one to me," said Noble.

He believes the MPAA used the term to describe the film's sexual theme of dominance and submission, which is spelled out explicitly in the novel. "Basically, it's a way of letting parents know that it's not your everyday sexual content," said Noble. "But you don't put 'submission and dominance' in the ratings description. (The MPAA is) rarely that specific, and parents that don't know what it is might be scared off by the term." Noble says he can't think of any film that has featured a sexual theme this extreme that managed to keep the R rating. He was surprised that the film wasn't rated NC-17. "I wish I was a fly on the wall in the rating negotiations for this one," said Noble. "I am sure it was a challenge to get it down to an R rating." He had to go back to 2004's Team America for a more unusual MPAA description. That one read: "Rated R for graphic crude and sexual humor, violent images and strong language — all involving puppets."
