The PlayStation 4 Pro was released just three years after the original PS4, and now with the PlayStation 5 entering its third year of release, fans have begun to speculate if the PlayStation 5 Pro is on the horizon. Unfortunately, not many of us have the opportunity to ask Sony such a question directly, but the Japanese magazine Famitsu did just that. The magazine had the opportunity to sit down with Hideaki Nishino, SIE Platform Experience SVP, to talk about the PSVR2 and the future of the PlayStation platform. Nishino gave an exciting response following the observation from Famitsu that the PS4 Pro was released three years after the original launch, which is where the PlayStation 5 is at now in its cycle. Nishino said, “By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a very important time for the platform as well. I hope you will look forward to next year (2023).” Although somewhat of a vague response (as to be expected), Nishino does hint that the platform will be getting an update in 2023. Earlier this year, Insider Gaming exclusively reported that Sony is planning on releasing a new PlayStation 5 in 2023. It’s understood that this new console will have a detachable disc drive, which will reduce manufacturing and shipping costs, but give consumers the opportunity to buy the console without the disc drive if they desire. Understandably, the report received criticism online as Sony already ships a Digital-only and disc version anyway. It’s believed this new console is to produce one console only, with the detachable disc drive being connected to the PlayStation 5 using an extra USB-C port on the back of the console. It’s unclear if the current digital PlayStation 5’s will be compatible with the disc drive or not. This new PlayStation 5 console will completely replace the original and digital PS5s by the end of 2023. Of course, Nishino could be referring to something entirely different here, but Insider Gaming sources are yet to confirm the production and testing of a PlayStation 5 Pro. In the US, the standard PS5 sells for $500, while the digital edition with no disc drive costs $400. Though PS5 stock is still hard to come by, stores have been adding inventory regularly throughout the 2022 holiday shopping season. Specifically, PS5 bundles with God of War Ragnarok or Call of Duty Modern Warfare have often been in and out of stock at retailers like Amazon, GameStop, and Sony's own PlayStation Direct store. Walmart and Best Buy have also offered periodic restocks of the PS5. These retailers all offer membership programs, and they often provide subscribers with direct email invitations, early access, or restock alerts to purchase PS5 consoles when they're available online. Meanwhile, GameStop is the store most likely to offer in-store pickup for PS5 consoles. We'll keep this post updated as we get more information about PS5 restocks, but ultimately you'll need to keep checking multiple stores and get a bit lucky with timing to secure the console.
